One Year of Making Waves: Celebrating a Year of Impact and Community at Għum u Għin

Writer: Emma TantiEmma Tanti

One year ago, a group of passionate individuals came together with a shared dream: to make the joy of swimming accessible to all, regardless of their circumstances. Today, as we celebrate the first anniversary of Għum u Għin m’Emma, we couldn't be prouder of the incredible journey we've embarked on. In just one year, we've given 177 free swimming lessons to various people through multiple organisations, and in the process, we've grown as a family and built a strong community dedicated to enjoying the sport and helping others. Join us as we reflect on this remarkable year of making waves and changing lives.

Our Journey Begins

Our story began with a simple yet powerful idea: everyone should have the opportunity to experience the freedom and joy of swimming. Armed with this vision, that all began with a trip to the Dominican Republic, I decided to stop conforming to the norm and open a swim organisation that eliminates all cultural, financial or systemic barriers. We collaborated with various voluntary organisations, social welfare services, schools, and community centres to identify individuals who would benefit most from our free swimming lessons. From children eager to learn to seniors looking to overcome their fear of water, we opened our arms to anyone who wanted to dive in.

The Power of 177 Lessons

In just one year, we've provided 177 free swimming lessons to people of all ages and backgrounds. Each lesson represented not just a chance to learn a life-saving skill but an opportunity to break down barriers, build confidence, and instil a lifelong love for the water. Some of our swimmers included cancer survivors, active ageing citizens, migrants, children coming from difficult socio-economic backgrounds, special needs and, persons with disabilities. We've witnessed the transformational power of these lessons, watching timid beginners turn into confident swimmers, one stroke at a time.

Growing as a Family

One of the most beautiful aspects of our journey has been the way our team and our swimmers have come together to form a tight-knit family. Our instructors, volunteers, and swimmers have shared countless laughs, struggles, and triumphs in the pool. We've celebrated each other's victories, big and small, and supported one another through challenges. Through this journey, we've grown not only as swimmers but as a family united by our love for the sport and our commitment to spreading its joys.

Building a Strong Community

Our mission extends beyond the pool's edge. We've worked diligently to build a community that shares our passion for swimming and helping others. Together, we've organised multiple collaborations, fundraisers, and community events to give back to the broader community and help to integrate with our Maltese culture. From charity swims benefiting local causes to educational programs on water safety, our community is a beacon of hope and positivity.

Looking towards the future

At Għum u Għin m’Emma, we firmly believe that the joy of swimming should be accessible to all, and our commitment to this cause remains unwavering. As we look ahead to the future, we are excited to expand our reach, offer even more free lessons, and continue to grow as a community dedicated to making waves, both in the pool and in the lives of those we touch.

As we celebrate our first year of existence, we are filled with gratitude for the incredible journey we've been on. We are excited for the years to come, knowing that the impact we've made so far is just the beginning. Thank you to all our volunteers, swimmers, supporters, friends and family who have made this journey possible. Together, we will keep making waves and changing lives.

From the bottom of our hearts THANK YOU!!!
